Buff State University Fieldhouse and Ice Arena – Elmwood Campus

AVL Designs Inc. originally designed the fieldhouse and ice arena sound systems for Buffalo State University over 20 years ago. The systems had been running well until recently when they started having some issues. All of the sound systems needed to be updated for a variety of reasons.

AVL Designs Inc. was hired to design new sound systems, along with acoustical treatments, for the ice arena and the field house.  We worked alongside Kideney Architects, PC to develop these new systems, using a combination of Danley Audio and Fulcrum Audio products which are brilliant high-definition speakers that produce excellent sound.  Our portion of the project was underway at the same time that LED video walls we being installed by other consultants.

The new sound system consisted of a series of distributed clusters positioned aloft around the arena in the main field house. Additionally, a system was installed specifically for use in graduation ceremonies.  During commencement exercises, the university brings in a separate console to operate the new system with Danley GH 60 speakers located at one end of the arena.

As part of the acoustic design plan, we had the roof deck treated with two inches of K13 cellulose acoustic spray, which dramatically reduces the reverberation and noise in the room, and then replaced the current sound system with a Fulcrum Audio distributed system and with speakers that are suspended over the ice for recreational skating.

The systems are highly intelligible, the room reverberation time is well under control, and mechanical noise has been greatly reduced.

Once again, the university and their many guests are very pleased with the results.
